Welcome to Discussion Board #1! Please do the following:

(1) View this wonderful 2019 keynote presentation by Rod Ellis at Korean TESOL (KOTESOL). This is 50 minutes in length and will review many of the concepts we discussed this week (and go more in depth into some that we only discussed briefly). I recommend you take notes, as you may find yourself referring to this lecture in future assignments!

(2) Now, view a 3-minute clip, taken from a much larger talk given at the New School in NYC in 2013, in which Scott Thornbury and Jeremy Harmer are debating CLT.

Begin your view at 49:15 (That’s minute 49, second 15), and end at 52:15 (minute 52, second 15). Here, you will heat Scott Thornbury explaining to Jeremy Harmer why TBLT is often “more trouble than it is worth.” You only need to watch these three minutes of the debate.

(3) Considering all that you have learned in Week 1, as well as what Ellis says in his KOTESOL address, how would you respond to Scott Thornbury? (HINT: You most likely will not 100 percent agree or 100 percent disagree with him. I would expect that you will both want to challenge him and point out where he has good arguments!)

(4) Post one original response here, and one response to someone else’s post. You must post your first post by Friday at 11:59 EST and your second by Sunday at 11:59 p.m. EST.

Looking forward to this discussion!
