Assignment Instructions

Course Objectives:

  • Revise artifacts from previous coursework throughout the program based on feedback from the instructor.
  • Organize a significant collection of artifacts in an ePortfolio including projects, papers, and other relevant examples showcasing work completed during the program to demonstrate mastery of the program objectives.

Artifact #3 ==> Presentation/Project/Audio-Video

Using submitted work from a previous class, locate a presentation/PowerPoint, major project, or some type of audio/video item to submit as your next artifact.  You will want to spend your time this week reviewing and critiquing your item before submission.  If you are unsure about whether your item fits into this category this week, please contact your faculty member for approval. You should have all of the following corrected:

  1. All mechanical errors
  2. All content errors
  3. Any other feedback received by your faculty member should be incorporated.


Submit your assignment once you have ensured that all corrections have been made.  Make sure you keep the final version of the assignment as you will begin loading it into your Portfolio in Week 5.  This assignment will NOT be submitted to Turnitin as it was previously submitted by your faculty member.

How can decision-makers anticipate, prevent, and limit and control chaos?

Chaos in an organization occurs when there is limited to no time for having a follow up of the rules. It may also occur when there are no rules developed. However, chaos may be a positive sign for an organization as it may indicate that an organization is growing or evolving. However, not all chaos is a positive indication. Chaos may occur due to inefficiencies and less than the required performance. It may also occur due to lost productivity, frustration, and poor morale.

Decision-makers can anticipate chaos if the organization is growing. Even though the growth of an organization is a good thing, growth leads to increased fulfilment needs, more transactions to be tracked, and more complications. While growing, an organization can grow the wrong way if it lacks the proper system in place to help the organization grow. Decision-makers can also anticipate chaos if the organization is utilizing more technology. Even though technology may help grow an organization, it may be counterproductive when the technology is not well leveraged. Data overload may be caused by too many potential ideas. This may drive away the focus of the organization’s core challenges (Holla, Ristvej & Titko, 2018). 

The first way that decision-makers can prevent chaos is by reinforcing the foundation. Employees can be rededicated towards the purpose of the organization. Connecting to the mission is essential when developing and evaluating critical strategic moves. This can unify employees and soothe them in short-term panic. The second way that chaos can be prevented by decision-makers is through solidification of the organization’s vision. Instilling confidence and focus give away panic. The vision can be regularly reviewed by the decision-makers to ensure that it remains possible and adjust it whenever needed. Encouraging talk about the vision and mission will instil confidence in employees hence reminding the employees not to panic about short-term conditions. The third way is through communicating confidence, progress, and hope. Reconnecting with the mission and solidifying vision will help communicate with transparency.

The first way to limit chaos is through communicating. Most chaos may occur due to a lack of communication. If employees are not getting the information that is needed, this may lead to inefficiency hence will increase the issue. Therefore, communicating the issue will limit chaos as vital information will be provided to employees. The second way that decision-makers can do to limit chaos is through providing data from different business applications and sources and creating the same language in an organization. The data can be provided to the employees for them to analyze it. The third way is through automation. Developing a well-defined workflow will ensure consistency, increase visibility, and improve control (Holla, Ristvej & Titko, 2018). The fourth way is through ensuring that the process or activity in an organization is measurable. To limit chaos, decision-makers need to understand how successfully they are in reducing the steps involved in the process.

The first way that decision-makers can do to control chaos is by managing employees like adults. In most cases, an organization can react to chaos as a means of tightening up control. This might not be the case for employees. Chaos can be controlled in this case by giving them space and the ability to make their own decision. The second way is through leveraging mistakes. During the chaos, employees may make irrational decisions. They may end up putting much weight on wrong factors and being distracted among others. Decision-makers may limit this by learning to leverage the mistakes as a means of educating the employees.

How can managers ensure organizational character during a crisis?

Organizational character is a common personality for different employees in an organization. An organizational character sets key differences in an organization and this sets a differentiated competitive advantage for an organization. An organizational character takes different concepts such as corporate strategies diversity, organizational culture uniqueness, and the development of employees’ personalities, among others. Managers can ensure organizational character during a crisis if they have chosen in advance to do what is right. A manager can do this by first understanding or stating that not all facts are known. The manager should then state the facts they know. The objective should be to do what is right, get it quick, get it out and get it over. To ensure organizational character during a crisis, a manager should prepare for a crisis that will allow them to process the thought of “if-then” occurs in an advance of an issue (Dozier, Grunig & Grunig, 2013). Therefore, decisions should be made in advance but not during a crisis. Anticipating for a crisis before it occurs will help a manager in preparing and making decisions and actions that will be taken if the crisis occurs. Additionally, preparing by having an open and honest response to a crisis in advance will prevent the manager from being led astray.

Waiting until a crisis occurs will put force to a manager which may change the manager’s perception. Group thinking is a strategy that a manager can use in ensuring organizational character during a crisis. A manager can consider having a cohesive group that will engage different people towards developing courses of action. This is an indication that a crisis can be a groupthink phenomenon. Early planning and decision making will help the manager to have the organizational values applicable and upheld during the crisis. Engaging in public transparency will save the organization time and reputation. A manager can ensure organizational character during a crisis if there is an already established direction to do the right thing. An organizational character can be ensured during a crisis if managers have an advance plan and training which will ensure that all parties in the organization understand the organization’s policy. Having an open and honest organizational policy will ensure that the integrity of an organization is maintained and that the organizational character is valued and protected even during a crisis.
